Jhanjarpur Eye Hospital.
This hospital, run by Bimal Kumar, moved into their own purpose-built premises recently, freeing them from dependency on landlords.
On our last visit before the pandemic, we provided a fillip to their care of paediatric patients in the form of portable Kay charts. These vision charts are designed to help test vision in pre-verbal children and can transform paediatric ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment both at a base hospital and in the villages.
Below is Bimal Kumar (centre) with eye surgeon Dr Seema Kumari and Second Sight orthoptist Rowena McNamara (right).
In less than an hour, optometrist Subodh Kumar and Randhir Kumar were trained in how to use the Kay charts and 2 year-old Arav demonstrated why this test is universally successful. The charts were donated by the inventor herself, Hazel Kay!
