Focus on Bihar – Jamui district
Bamdah Mission Hospital, Jamui District
Bihar’s oldest eye hospital has been providing eye services, jobs and ancillary work for the people of Bihar for over 130 years. It is unique in providing consistent ophthalmic services for the poor in north India where hospitals have come and gone, thriving for a few years but forced to shut due to the exodus of their doctors. Dr Samuel Murmu is the surgeon-in-charge.
‘What I like about Second Sight is that they help train doctors and nurses on site, enabling us to keep our skills updated but allowing us to work in our own way towards becoming self-sufficient and sustainable hospitals. Bamdah has been here for a long while but now so many other hospitals in Bihar are benefitting from this approach.’ Dr Murmu
